According to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and director of the Torch Run Jonathan Nichols, some 60 to 65 officers of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force will be making the run today from Rabacca to Kingstown.

Stops are expected to be made along the way, with the first being at Georgetown, followed by Biabou and Calliaqua, before the runners meet up with the hierarchy of the police force at the Central Police Station. From there, they will travel to the Victoria Park, where the torch will light the cauldron, marking the beginning of the Special Olympics.

Nichols explained that internationally, the Torch Run is among the largest grassroot fund-raising events for Special Olympics.

It also serves to raise awareness for persons with disabilities.

The funds collected will be used to assist Special Olympic teams to participate in local and regional games and, in particular, the Special Olympics World Summer Games in 2015. (DD)
