GTC’s ‘Tennis for Hope’ – an extraordinary initiative

Marketing Manager at Digicel Juno DeRoche has described the Grassroot Tennis Club’s (GTC) “Tennis for Hope” initiative as extraordinary.{{more}}

The Tennis for Hope event was held last Sunday, October 20, at the Haddon Hotel Courts at Richmond Hill and was the GTC’s contribution to the St Vincent and the Grenadines Medical Association’s fight against breast cancer.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the event on Sunday, DeRoche said that Digicel was glad to get onboard with the GTC as breast cancer and cancer on a whole is a serious issue.

She said that it is important that persons as well as organizations get on board to help fight cancer in any way possible as persons who survived cancer and even those who do not yet know they have cancer, need all the support they can get.

“We are glad to play our part in helping fight cancer”, said DeRoche.

The special event was first held in October 2011 and Head of the GTC Grant Connell said that this is the GTC’s small way of creating breast cancer awareness.

On Sunday, he handed over some EC$5,000 to Head of the SVG Medical Association Dr Rosalind Ambose. Connell said that money was raised by the sale of Tennis for Hope T-Shirts and other activities put on by the GTC.

The event was sponsored by Sunsail St Vincent, Evian Water and Digicel among others.

During the event a number of games were played including doubles tennis with one racket per team. Among the persons visiting the event were Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne and Head of the SVG Tennis Association Miles Boyea. Coaches from St. Lucia and Grenada were also present.

The games were played with pink tennis balls. Pink is the universal color used to represent the breast the cancer fight.
