SVGCU holds cycling battle royal this Sunday
The gauntlet has been thrown down leading up to this Sundayâs KPMG 48-mile road race put on by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cycling Union in the North Windward area from 3 p.m.{{more}}
The race rides off from the Langley Park junction in Bay Road, Georgetown, on the north eastern side of the island, to Touroma, then to the gas station in Mount Young.
This constitutes one lap of the course.
Category one of the road cyclists will do eight laps, while category two, the mountain bikers and the female cyclists, will cover 36 miles or six laps.
The banter is waging, as an impressive field is expected to take the starterâs gun in search of the top spot.
Dethroned from his pinnacle two weeks ago by Oneal George, the previously high riding Zefal Bailey will be seeking to return to the place where he sat unchallenged for most of the year.
Reports are that George wants to show that his recent triumph was no fluke.
Meanwhile, Zefalâs older brother Shimano, also a seasoned cyclist and Dominic Ollivierre, who like Shimano, is based overseas, are expected to be in the line-up, while the resurgence of Lucky Antrobus and the re-entry of Cammie Adams will not only spice up the event, but intensify the rivalry.
Veteran cyclist Peter Durrant, who should not be counted out, said he is certain that Sundayâs winner will not be any âyoung boyâ, thus, predicting that Zefal Bailey will suffer another consecutive defeat over the course.
Not to be left out, the likes of Steve Ollivierre, Curtis Lewis and Martin Bollers are mounting their saddles, looking to outdo one another in the lower categories.
Likewise, Niesha Alexander, who is yet to be beaten for this year, will be warding off an improving Crystal Durrant, in the womenâs category.
Following directly on the peloton Sundayâs race, the calendar of the SVG Cycling Union pedals on with the staging of a 10-day Olympic Solidarity Course for BMX and mountain bikes, beginning on Monday.(RT)
