Layou extend dominance of National Under-13 Football

A 33rd minute goal, scored by Joel Quashie last Sunday afternoon at Victoria Park, was enough to give Layou the 2013 Metrocint Insurance National Inter Community League Football title.{{more}}

Quashie capitalized on a defence error made by Aaron Jackson of East Kingstown. Jackson let through Quashie, who made no mistake in depositing the ball in the back of the net.

It was a revisit for Quashie who netted both goals in last year’s win over Central Kingstown.

Last Sunday’s win crowned off another unbeaten run for Chester Hendrickson, who coached the Layou outfit.

A calm Hendrickson told SEARCHLIGHT at the end of the match that it was not much of a sweat for his players, as they were always confident of taking the title.

“We were never flustered … We were always confident of winning; We are accustomed to playing this kind of football… What you saw here today is the icing on the cake for the years of grooming the players and carrying them around the country, playing other teams,” Hendrickson said.

Hendrickson’s opposite number, Ian Sardine, was of the opinion that his charges were overwhelmed by the occasion.

“…They were a bit timid out there…. They are not used to playing in front so many people, including their parents…. What we need is for the parents to come along more often and continue to give them that sort of support always,” Sardine said.

In getting to last Sunday’s championship match, Layou had a 2-nil win over South Leeward, while East Kingstown edged out Barrouallie 1-nil.

Barrouallie took the third place, when they beat South Leeward, 3-2.

Sunday’s two finalists emerged from the preliminary, which also included North Windward, North Leeward, Marriaqua and West Kingstown.

The top finishers will receive school supplies, compliments the sponsors. (RT)
