National Community Football League semi-finalists ready

Sion Hill faces South Leeward and Layou goes up against Barrouallie, in the semi-final match-ups for the senior men’s division of the Hairoun National Inter Community League Football competition.{{more}}

The first legs of the semis are set for Monday, April 29.

Played on a theoretical home and away basis, as all matches will be played at the Victoria Park, Sion Hill will be away to South Leeward, while the determination of the home or away status of the Layou versus Barrouallie encounter was not known up to press time.

The teams meet again on Friday, May 2, with the format reversed.

Layou and Barrouallie were the last to reach the final four, when they achieved their berth last Thursday.

First up, the 2012 champion Barrouallie overcame a spirited Stubbs team 6-5, through kicks from the penalty spot, after both teams had played to a goal-less draw in regulation time, and were still locked at that score, and another half-hour of extra time did not change the deadlock.

But Layou recorded a 3-2 win over Calliaqua in the second quarter finals.

Shandell Samuel netted all three for Layou, and Leslo McKenzie responded for Calliaqua.

Earlier in the week, on Sunday, Sion Hill and South Leeward bolted their way to the semi-finals.

Sion Hill, who did not win a match in last year’s competition, has had a new lease of life this time around.

Scrapping their way to the second round on goal differential, Sion Hill finished third in the group, thus earning the right to meet North Leeward in the quarter-final.

Cauldric Sutherland gave the Sion Hilliarians the lead in the first half against North Leeward, but this was short-lived, as Elias Striater – a Peace Corps volunteer restored parity with a goal directly from a corner.

Sion Hill, in the second half, added two quick goals from Juma Gilkes and Rohan Thomas Jr respectively, but Striater added his team’s second, netting from a free-kick.

Good goalkeeping by Sion Hill’s Cosmore Toney staved off some forays by North Leeward.

Dorian Dallaway, with a brace, quelled the tension for Sion Hill, as North Leeward faded into submission, as their dream run came to an end.

Sion Hill’s opponent in the semi-finals, South Leeward, had a less complicated look-in, as they ousted Central Kingstown 3-1.

For South Leeward, Atwyn Prince scored two from the penalty spot, with Kenson Stoddard netting the other. Azhino Solomon replied for the once potent and much touted Central Kingstown.

The final of the competition is set for Sunday, May 5, also at the Victoria Park.

The winner pockets $10,000.(RT)
