Athletes gearing up for regional and international meets

Local athletes are eyeing regional and international meets, but they must first prove their worth on the local scene.{{more}}

And, last Saturday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field, many put themselves in line for selection as Team Athletics SVG staged the Juvenile Championships, along with some heats for the National Club Championships.

The juvenile championships saw competition in the Under-7, Under-9, Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15, with events varying from the 60 m to the 1000 m, as well as the 80 m hurdles, for both males and females.

Also at the juvenile championships, was the emergence of the newest track and field entity, Negative To Positive (NTP), headed by the energetic Chester Morgan.

Apart from securing accolades in the juvenile championships, athletes were vyeing for spots in this year’s Central American and Caribbean Age group championships, which take place in Curacao in May.

Meanwhile, athletes have another outlet to showcase the athletic talent, when the national club championships are staged on May 4.

The St Kitts National Championships, the OECS Invitational and the Trinidad and Tobago National Championships are all scheduled for June.

There should also be Vincentian participation in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) senior championships at the Haseley Crawford Stadium in Trinidad and Tobago in July.

On the international scene, St Vincent and the Grenadines is set to be part of the 8th IAAF World Youth Championships in the Ukraine in July, as well as the Pan American Juniors in Lima, Peru and the 14th IAAF Outdoor Championship in Moscow, Russia, both in August.
