Windwards floating for Trinis at Arnos Vale

Buoyant after their three-wicket schooling of the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) earlier this week at the Beausejour Cricket Stadium in St Lucia,{{more}} the Windwards take on Trinidad and Tobago here at the Arnos Vale Playing Field from today Friday, in the West Indies Cricket Board four-day regional cricket series.

Facing the students, the Windwards dominated the match from the get go and formalised their win on day four of the match, on Tuesday.

Left-handed opening batsman Devon Smith was the fulcrum of the Windwards’ batting, as he struck centuries in both innings.

He piloted the Windwards second innings response with 106 not out, following up his 139 in his team’s first innings.

Requiring 185 to get maximum points, the Windwards, without the usual hiccups, reached 187 for 3.

The CCC in their first innings scored 309. Anthony Alleyne hit a top score of 84.

The Windwards’ main wicket takers were Shane Shillingford, who took 3 for 76, Nelon Pascal 3 for 92, Garey Mathurin 2 for 44, and Dellorn Johnson 2 for 50.

Led by Smith’s 139, the Windwards responded with 409, a lead of 100.

Chipping in were Dalton Polius with 77; Tyrone Theophile – 54, Shane Shillingford – 37 and Andre Fletcher – 41.

Akeem Dewar had 4 for 127 and Raymon Reifer 3 for 38.

Batting a second time, the CCC posted 284. Chadwick Walton struck 88; Akeem Dewar 52 and Kyle Corbin 31.

Nellon Pascal collected 5 for 81 and Shane Shillingford 2 for 78, bowling for the Windwards.

The Windwards will be looking this weekend to rid themselves of the bogey against the Trinidad and Tobago at the Arnos Vale venue.

When both teams met in 2011 at the same venue, Trinidad and Tobago won by 51 runs.

This weekend’s second round fixture is the first for the Trinis, who sat out the first round, because of their annual Carnival celebrations.

Summarised results in the two other first round matches: Jamaica beat Barbados by 63 runs at the Kensington Oval in Barbados and Guyana took first innings honours over the Leewards in a drawn match at Sir Vivian Richards Cricket Stadium in Antigua.

Jamaica: 162 and 188; Barbados 165 and 128. The Leewards: 182 and 322; Guyana 279 and 173 for 6.

This weekend Jamaica hosts the CCC at Sabina Park and Barbados hosts Guyana at the Kensington Oval.

The Leewards get the bye this weekend in the seven team competition. (RT)
