“Marty” appreciates Vincentians’ appreciation

The man considered this country’s national mascot, Martian “Marty” King is usually the cheerleader at many local events. So, last Sunday night at the Victoria Park, when he was the centre of attention at two friendly football matches, it was not unusual.{{more}}

The event was a fund-raiser for Marty, put on by the St Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation, the National Lotteries Authority and Friends of Marty.

Marty has been diagnosed with a life threatening illness and is in dire need of medical treatment overseas.

Last Sunday’s effort was the first major show of support — support which overwhelmed the ailing man.

Seated in the bleachers section of the Victoria Park with his common law wife Keziah Blugh, Marty conveyed to SEARCHLIGHT his appreciation for Sunday’s efforts.

“This first one, I feel real good for the support from the people and they came out for me”, Mary acknowledged in a shrill voice.

He praised the efforts of all who put the night’s package together and thanked SEARCHLIGHT for playing its part in highlighting his plight in a publication last month.

King revealed that his condition is worsening, but he is holding on to hope that the funds would be realized in the shortest possible time, for him to travel to get treatment soonest.

He said that agents of government are working to liaise with Cuban medical officials to have him travel to that country to receive the urgent necessary treatment.

Reiterating his appreciation for the gestures thus far, Marty said that others willing to contribute to his cause may do so at the St Vincent Co-operative Bank, account # 87050, in the name “Martian King”.

It was also revealed that another function will be staged at Victoria Park on Saturday night, all in aid of Marty.

Last Sunday’s matches saw first up the SVGFF’s outfit and the Marty’s XI playing to a three-all tie, and in the second match, national community/inter league champions Barrouallie stopped national club champions Avenues, two goals to nil.
