SVG out of CFU

St Vincent and the Grenadines Under-20 footballers failed to advance from Group 4 to the next round of the Caribbean Football Union qualifiers, when they went under to Trinidad and Tobago, 3 goals to nil,{{more}} Sunday night at the Victoria Park.

The home side went into last Sunday night’s match buoyant, after their 3-1 triumph over Guyana on Friday night, through goals from Damien John, Nazron Hoyte and Jomo Toppin, while Guyana’s goal came from Beneakaman Smartt.

Trinidad and Tobago suffered a 3-nil defeat at the hands of Suriname, also in the first of Friday’s double header. The Trinidadians were dismantled by a brace from Apai Yekini and a Darson Danny penalty.

The Trinidadians, with their reputation at stake, quickly got into stride and took early command of the match.

It was not too long before Jomal Williams got on the end of a Kye West cut back on the penalty area, to deposit the ball past Jovan Lynch in the goal in the fifth minute.

The Trinidadian’s second goal came in the 39th minute through West, who came on the blind side of the Vincentian defence, to double his team’s tally.

In between, the home team came close to scoring, but the final decisive and penetrative pass was lacking.

Adan Noel’s rasping right foot shot, from about 25 yards, bulged the net in the 43rd minute, to make it three for the Trinidad and Tobago.

St Vincent and the Grenadines resurged in the second half, creating several goal scoring opportunities, but failed to penetrate the goal occupied by John Rameses Thomas.

When Grenadian referee Valman Bedeau blew the whistle to end the match, several Vincentian players wept openly, conscious that their chances of getting to the next phase were no more.

Assistant Coach and Manager of the local team Wayde Jackson told SEARCHLIGHT, following the match, “The big game jitters got the better of the players.”

Jackson said the momentum from beating Guyana was brought into last Sunday’s match, however, the Vincentians lost it mentally.

“This is part of our football, which we have to work on with our children — mental football, … coming up against a team like Trinidad, thinking is years we haven’t beaten Trinidad and they went out there scared and gave up two easy goals and from that they put their heads down,” Jackson said.

Jackson, however, was complimentary of his players for showing guts in the second half, as they stemmed the flow of goals and came close to scoring themselves.

Earlier last Sunday evening, Guyana recorded a two-one win over Suriname.

Scoring for Guyana were Daniel Wilson and Jamal Booker, with Darson Danny netting for Suriname.

The Surinamese emerged winners of the group and advanced to the final, along with the three other group winners and Jamaica. The CFU finals are slated for November this year.

Trinidad and Tobago, with second place in group four, earn a place in the final as one of the three best second placed teams.

The CONCACAF final round takes place in Puebla, Mexico, in February, 2013. 12 teams will compete at the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship. Canada, Mexico, and U.S.A will be joined by four teams from Central America and five teams from the Caribbean.

The top four teams will qualify for the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey.(RT)
