SVG ties with St Lucia for third in Windward Islands Schools Games
St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) held on to third place when the 2012 Caribbean Bank Note/ Super Six Windward Islands Schools Games ended in Grenada last Saturday.{{more}}
Sharing the third spot with the Vincentians was St Lucia, as both tallied 22 points.
SVG topped female volleyball, was third in football, track and field and male volleyball.
In male and female basketball as well as netball, SVG was last.
In the female volleyball component, the Vincentians overcame the Dominicans, Grenadians and the St Lucians, all by 3-1 margins.
SVGâs lone win in male volleyball was a 3-0 triumph over St Lucia, but they suffered defeats against Grenada and Dominica, by the same margins.
In football, SVG drew with Dominica 1-1, then stopped St Lucia 3-1, but lost to Grenada 2-0.
In male basketball, SVG was beaten by Grenada 97-44; by Dominica 62-50 and by St Lucia 58-52.
SVG lost all three matches in female basketball, going under to Dominica 40-15, 32-17 versus St Lucia and 53-30 to Grenada.
The most shocking was the Vincentiansâ subpar efforts in netball. SVG was beaten by Dominica 38-33, then lost to St Lucia 42-29 and went under to Grenada 52-41.
When the games opened on July 28 with track and field, SVG finished third, behind Grenada and Dominica.
SVG compiled 143 points, behind Grenadaâs 202 and Dominicaâs 147. St Lucia mustered 24 points, having arrived in Grenada late, thus missing the greater part of the events.
The top performer for SVG was Phillisica Dember, who won the shot put and discus.
Also capturing gold were Kasique Oliver who claimed the male 1500m and Kenroy Cupid in the male 200m.
The MVPs for SVG were Azhino Solomon – football, Kenroy Williams – male basketball, Alicia Cox – female basketball, Jamal Small – male volleyball; Danielle Lavia – female volleyball and Delonie Sam – netball.
Grenada retained the title, compiling 39 points. The host was triumphant in track and field, football and male and female basketball.
Dominica rallied to 29 points, having won the male volleyball segment. St Lucia copped the netball component.
The Vincentian contingent of 61 students and eight officials returned last Sunday afternoon and were met at the airport by Deputy Chief Education Officer Beverly Neptune.
The 2013 edition of the multi-discipline games will be hosted by SVG. (RT)
