2012 National Squash Championships climaxes
The 2012 National Squash Championships came to a close on Saturday, May 5th, with Jules Snagg and Amber Glasgow claiming the major titles in the Menâs and Womenâs Open.{{more}}
The event was played over 3 days (May 3rd-5th) with many exciting matches on display. In the Womenâs final, former junior champion Glasgow overcame Greta Primus 11/3, 11/8, 11/13, 13/11 to clinch her first National senior title.
Tessa Shallow-King took 3rd place match over Dierdre Myers, winning 11/6, 11/6, 11/8. On the menâs side, Kevin Hannaway and Jules Snagg contested the Menâs Open final.
At 18 and 19 years of age respectively, this was a highly anticipated match-up between two of the Caribbeanâs most promising teenagers. In the end, Snagg was crowned National Menâs champion for the 2nd straight year, defeating his rival 6/11, 11/3, 11/8, 11/5 in a high tempo match. Meanwhile, Kevin Bailey overcame Shane Slater 11/6, 11/6, 12/10 to seal 3rd place.
In the Menâs B division, Collin Alexander upset defending champion Raffique Browne 11/8, 11/8, 5/11, 11/9 in the final. James Bentick prevented a double victory however, stopping Alexander 11/8, 11/8, 11/6 for the Menâs 40+ crown.
In the 3rd place play-off, Telbert Samuel defeated Perry Defreitas 11/5, 11/3, 12/14, 11/8. Capping a very successful tournament, Samuel claimed an unexpected victory, as he emerged atop the Menâs 50+ round robin, defeating Leroy Lewis, John Horne and defending champion Keith Boyea.
Many of these players hope to continue their success in the upcoming OECS Squash Championships in the British Virgin Islands. The SVG Squash Association thanks all of the tournamentâs participants/supporters and wishes good luck to all the players representing the nation in upcoming regional events.
