SVG Volleyballers finish second in Qualifiers

St Vincent and the Grenadines Senior Men’s Volleyball team had to contented with the second place behind host St Lucia in the Final of the 2014 World Championships Qualification Tournament{{more}} of the NORCECA First Round Group B at the Beausejour Indoor Facility, last Sunday night.

The Vincentians were beaten 3-0 (25-16, 25- 18, 25-13) by the host team in the title match.

It was the Vincentians second defeat in the competition by the St Lucians, who played unbeaten throughout, taking all their matches by three nil margins.

In the preliminary round of competition, St Vincent and the Grenadines beat Grenada 3-1; and whipped St Eustatius 3-0, but suffered a 3-0 defeat by St Lucia.

In the semi finals, St Vincent and the Grenadines repeated a 3-1 triumph over the Grenadians, thus setting up last Sunday night’s final versus the host.

Coach of the St Vincent and the Grenadines team, Brian Burke at the end of last Sunday’s match, admitted: “We were simply beaten by a superior team”

Burke said that his team was also guilty of making too many errors.

Looking ahead, Burke said his players will be using the knowledge gained from the tournament to take them through to other tournaments.

“We will be taking a two-week break and will resume training after,” Burke, a former St Vincent and the Grenadines player reported.

The third place play-off, which preceded the final, saw Grenada overcoming St Eustatius 3-0, condemning them to their fifth successive loss.

St Eustatius ended the qualification round winless, pointless and did not win a set.

St Vincent and the Grenadines joins St Lucia and Grenada in the second round in 2013 for the World Championships Qualification.

St Vincent and the Grenadines and St Lucia, by virtue of the placing in the qualifiers, have booked berths for the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA) Senior Championships, set for later this year, also in St Lucia. (RT)
