SVG stutters in CNA Under-16 Netball Tournament

Host St Vincent and the Grenadines stuttered yesterday in their third match in the National Lotteries Authority Jean Pierre Caribbean Netball Association Under-16 Tournament {{more}} which is taking place here at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.

After easily winning their first two encounters, St Vincent and the Grenadines found the going tough against Trinidad and Tobago and went under 22-28.

For the host, Khadijah Williams netted 13 of her 19 attempts; Denesha Gurley sank 6 of her 8 and Danielle Patterson registered 3 of her 6.

On Saturday, the Vincentians had outscored Dominica 57- 19 and last Sunday evening humbled Antigua and Barbuda 41-6.

In their opening salvo, the Vincentian shooters were in moderate form. Khadijah Williams poured in 48 of her 61 attempts and Denesha Gurley registered 9 of her 15.

Playing against Antigua and Barbuda, the Vincentian lasses’ accuracy improved, as three shooters were used.

Williams netted 32 of her 34 attempts; Gurley recorded 4 for 6 and Danielle Patterson 5 of her 6 tries.

In other matches played on Saturday, Barbados beat Grenada 32-16 and St Lucia defeated Antigua and Barbuda 32 to 9.

Also on Sunday, Trinidad and Tobago whipped Dominica 47-16 and St Lucia and Grenada played to a 20 all tie.

Last evening, another three matches were scheduled. Down for decision were St Vincent and the Grenadines, which was looking to rebound against Barbados; Trinidad and Tobago was set to meet Antigua and Barbuda and St Lucia was up against Dominica.

Barbados yesterday gave Dominica a 57-7 drubbing and Grenada stopped Antigua and Barbuda 26-10.

The Vincentians are in action this evening against Grenada, while St Lucia plays Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua and Barbuda comes up against Barbados.

Preceding this evening’s matches, there will be the Shooting Competition.

On Wednesday, St Vincent and the Grenadines comes up against St Lucia; Barbados engages Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica plays Grenada.

Before that though, there is the Breakfast with the Stars aspect, where the players will have an opportunity to meet and mingle with persons who have excelled in various spheres of Vincentian life.

The Tournament closes off on Thursday with Antigua and Barbuda facing off with Dominica; Grenada battles Trinidad and Tobago and St Lucia takes on Barbados.

Following Thursday’s matches, the Closing and Presentation Ceremony will take place, as well as the announcement of the Caribbean Under-16 team.

This, the 13th edition of the tournament, named in honour of the late stalwart Trinidadian Jean Pierre, got off to a bright start with a colourful March Past and Opening Ceremony on Saturday, April 14.

Addressing the opening were President of the Caribbean Netball Association Kathy Harper-Hall, President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association Dellarice Duncan, Country Manager of LIME Leslie Jack; Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Elvis Charles and Director of Sports and Physical Education Nelson Hillocks.

The previous night, Friday, there was a candlelight march from the Arnos Vale Methodist Church to the Arnos Vale Sports Complex. (RT)
