RSVG Police holds on to RSS Cricket title

Host constabulary, the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force, claimed the Regional Security Services (RSS) Twenty /20 Cricket title, when they defeated Grenada in the final last Sunday afternoon at the Arnos Vale One Playing Field.{{more}}

St Vincent and the Grenadines’ bowlers were able to dismiss Grenada for 114, as the visitors went in search of 135 to win.

Rondell Baptiste, with a controlled knock of 65, had threatened to carry the Grenadians to victory, however, when he was dismissed Leg Before Wicket by O’ Neil Thomas, his team’s chances evaporated. Rondell Garcia chipped in with 20.

Bowling for St Vincent and the Grenadines law officers, Kenroy Martin took 3 for 22; Mohammed Lavia had 3 for 29 and Rolando Wright 2 for 6.

The host team batted first and made 134 for 6 from their 20 overs. O’ Neil Thomas led the way with 44; Gosnel Cupid hit 25 and Salvan Browne 22. Bowling for Grenada Laurie Williams had 3 for 24.

This meant that the Vincentians had only lost one match in the three team competition, which also included St Lucia.

With the teams playing each other twice in the preliminary round, St Vincent and the Grenadines defeated Grenada twice; by three runs and by seven wickets and whipped St Lucia 24 runs , but also went under to the St. Lucians 19 runs.

Grenada’s two wins came against St. Lucia, first by 37 runs, then by 12 runs.

In the individual awards, St. Lucian Cyril Charles was the best bowler, with Grenadian Leon Chechester, the best batsman, for his 144 runs, and the Most Outstanding Player, as he also took 14 wickets.

St Vincent and the Grenadines added another title, as they completed the hat trick for the Clarkson/ Miler trophy, which is competed for annually against Grenada.

The Grenadians did not leave empty handed however, as they won the Softball Cricket Competition which was played on Saturday at the Belair Playing Field.

Addressing the Closing and Presentation Ceremony last Sunday at the Arnos Vale Playing Field were this country’s Commissioner of Police Keith Miller, President of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, Julian Jack; the event co-ordinator, Elvis Browne, as well as Deputy Commissioner of the St. Lucia Police Force Errol Alexander and Superintendent of Police of the Grenada Police Force, Michael Francis.

All the speakers supported the competition, in helping to forge regional unity.

The RSS competition will be staged in St. Lucia in 2013, when it is hoped that more member countries will participate. (RT)
