Mc Kie calls for Softball Cricket Champions League

Minister of Tourism, Sports and Culture Cecil McKie wants to see the top finishers in the several Softball Cricket competitions across St Vincent and the Grenadines squaring off in a champion of champions showdown.{{more}}

McKie made this suggestion last Saturday afternoon at the Opening Ceremony of the Premier Distributors/Premium Products Calliaqua Area Development Organization (CADO) Competition, at the Calliaqua Playing Field.

Mc Kie’s call was directed to the Executive of the St Vincent and the Grenadines Cricket Association, who he said should take hold of such a competition.

His reasons were that several of the same players and teams participate in the Cricket competitions under the aegis of the national Cricket body, as well as the many Softball Cricket competitions which are convened here.

“My challenge to the Cricket Association is to form what you call a champion of champions, that come out of all these Softball Competitions,” Mc Kie requested.

“You come and play in the competition, and there is no ultimate goal. Yes, the organizers will keep you engaged n physical activity and sporting activity, but, what is there as an ultimate goal for all these competitions?” the Minister of Sports inquired of the teams present.

Mc Kie said he is taking the lead in kick-starting the process, which he hopes will see the realization of the nationwide champion of champions competition.

“We, in fact, are going to lead the way in West St George; we did so with the recommencement of the Primary Schools’ hard ball competition, and I am going to speak with the Hon. Clayton Burgin, the area representative here (East St George), to bring together the two champion teams from the three competitions in West St George and your competition here in East St George, that is the Dorsetshire Hill competition, the TBPO Competition and the ASCO Competition,” the West St George MP proffered.

Mc Kie stated that the eight teams will square off in one weekend of action to be crowned champion of champions of the St Georges, where attractive cash prizes will be at stake.

Mc Kie’s suggestion of the champions league came in light of previous calls for the streamlining of Softball Cricket in St Vincent and the Grenadines, through the formation of a national body.

In Mc Kie’s view: “To form an umbrella body for Softball might be difficult.”

Also addressing the brief ceremony was Samantha Abbott-Lynch, who spoke on behalf of the Division of Physical Education and Chairman of CADO, Foster Hannibald, who gave an overview of the competition. (RT)
