SJCM, GSSS land Schools’ Volleyball titles

The St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown and the George Stephens Secondary claimed the Female and Male categories of the Q- Care Inter Secondary School Volleyball titles, respectively, at the National Lotteries Authority court at Richmond Hill last Wednesday afternoon.{{more}}

The St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown dismissed the Georgetown Secondary School in straight sets, winning 26-24 and 25-21.

In the more competitive male final, the George Stephens Secondary had to ward off a spirited Georgetown Secondary. George Stephens took the first set 25-16, but Georgetown rebounded to win the second at 25-23, but the George Stephens players, rallied hard in the decisive third set, winning it 15-10.

Earlier in the piece, the George Stephens Secondary School defeated the Thomas Saunders Secondary 31-29 and 25-18, to take the third place in the female segment.

In the consolation among the males, the Petit Bordel Secondary outplayed the Thomas Saunders Secondary, also in two sets to nil, as they won 25-17, 25-21.

In the presentation of awards which followed, Lo-Anne Barnum of the George Stephens Secondary was voted Best Setter, with Kimisha Vincent of the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown, named the Best Receiver. Shernell Browne of the Georgetown Secondary copped the award of the Best Server.

Shaquille Brancker of the St. Joseph’s Convent Kingstown was voted Player of the Final.

Among the males, Jamal Small of the George Stephens Secondary was adjudged the Best Setter, as well as the Player of the Final.

The Georgetown Secondary’s Kimron Quashie got the award for being the Best Setter by the adjudicators and Daveron Barnum, also of the George Stephens Secondary, the Best Server.

This year’s Schools’ Volleyball Championships represent a revival after several years of its absence on the national sporting calendar.

The attention now shifts to the National Club Tournament which opens this Sunday afternoon from 3:00 pm at the Girls’ High School court.
