The 25th Garfield Sobers International School Cricket Tournament took place from July 4 to the 14, 2011. The team consisted of 14 members, including four cricketers of Sandy Bay Secondary School as guest players. The team from St. Vincent and the Grenadines placed 17th. Twenty-four teams took part in the tournament.
Coach of the team, Keithlind Bynoe, told SEARCHLIGHT that the team did well. The boys competed against several regional and international teams, including the Choiseul School of St. Lucia, Solihull School of United Kingdom, the Harrison College and the Ellerslie School of Barbados, the Presentation College and the St. Maryâs School of Trinidad, and the Queenâs College Taunton of the United Kingdom. These teams were in the Zone C category.
Going into more detail about the outstanding performances of the boys, Bynoe stated that best batsman on the St. Vincent and the Grenadines team was Denson Hoyte of the Sandy Bay Secondary School. Hoyte made 190 runs at an average of 37.4 with two half centuries. He stated that Hoyte was also the best all rounder, doing well in bowling with five wickets.
Austin Edwards of the St. Clair Dacon also did well in bowling, taking out ten wickets. Romano Quashie also did well in bowling, claiming 4 wickets. In competing against the teams in their Zone, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines defeated Choiseul School of St. Lucia by 8 wickets, and the Solihull school by 9 wickets.
Bynoe added that the tournament not only focused on the competitive aspect but stated that friendships were made, as the members of the team interacted with other teams at the tournament. He added that during the trip, coaches also assisted the boys in terms of social and spiritual development, allowing them to grow as individuals.
Expressing that raising funds for the trip was a bit difficult, Bynoe thanked God for His help in enabling the team to make it to the tournament. He also thanked the parents of the boys, the St. George Stephens Snr. Secondary School, the Members of the Vincy Association in Barbados, especially Mr. Halley Moore, the Barbados Defence Force, the Barbados Tourism Authority, and Courts St. Vincent.
The St. Clair Dacon Secondary School also participated in the tournament last year and placed 11th out of 18 teams. The tournament is open to any Secondary School Cricket team.(OS)
