Madd Rockaz takes Guinness Football Challenge
Madd Rockaz of Layou emerged winners of the Guinness Street Football Challenge finals, last Saturday night, at the Arnos Vale Netball Complex.{{more}}
Madd Rockaz featured six players who have turned out for St. Vincent and the Grenadines at different age groups, including senior level, in Shandell Samuel, Winslow Mc Dowald, Jolanshoy Mc Dowald, Chester Morgan, Norrell George and Wendell Cuffy.
In the grand finale, they led their team into victory over Hope International.
But it was a first half strike from Samuel, which turned out to be the lone goal.
Hope, though, missed a penalty, as Juma Gilkes kicked wide, following a call by referee Dominic Stowe for a handled ball.
Madd Rockaz pocketed EC$ 2,000, a trophy and gold medals, plus, each of the eight players was afforded $50 credit, compliments Digicel.
Madd Rockaz, earlier in the night, beat Double Trouble, one nil, with Samuel again the goal scorer.
Hope reached the Final, with a three nil defeat of School Yard in the semi-finals. Nicholi Williams, Juma Gilkes and Dwayne Dennie were the goal scorers for Hope International. Hopeâs efforts earned them $1,000, a trophy and silver medals.
Double Trouble took the third spot, earning themselves a trophy, $500 and bronze medals. Double Trouble beat School Yard, on their way to the third spot. School Yard walked away with $250.
School Yardâs Cleus Codougan was adjudged the Most Valuable Player, as he netted a total of 17 goals for his team.
The challenge started with 16 preliminary zones, with the winner of each zone advancing to the elimination round. Thereafter, it was the quarter-final stage.
The winners of each of the preliminary rounds earned $200, so too did the winners of the round of 16, the winning quarter-finalists and the four semi-finalists.
Last Saturday nightâs event was graced with the presence of Kenwyne Jones, who plays for Trinidad and Tobago, and Stoke City, in the English Premier League.
