National Senior Squash Championships end
The Finals of the Senior National Squash Championships 2011 were played on Friday, May 27, 2011, at the National Squash Centre, Paulâs Avenue.{{more}} The spectators were treated to some keenly contested matches as the seniors battled for places on the National squad.
The finals began with matches in the Menâs Open Group B division. Raffique Browne cruised past Bradley Glasglow, defeating him 11/5, 11/6, 11/6 to win that title. Caribbean U-13 Champion Jason Doyle was third, having defeated Steve Ollivierre 11/8, 10/12, 13/11, 11/8. Keith Boyea retained the Menâs Over 50 title by defeating Leroy Lewis 11/1, 5/11, 11/9, 11/10. Third place was Telbert Samuel. Cyrus brothers Paul and Mark battled for a match up with eventual winner James Bentick in the Menâs Over 40 category. Paul defeated Mark 11/5, 11/13, 11/6, 12/10 and James defeated Paul 11/9/11/9 11/6. Third place went to Collin Alexander who defeated Steve Ollivierre 11/9, 11/8, 6/11, 14/12.
In the Womenâs Open, Sherian Slater retained her title by defeating Greta Primus 11/5, 11/9, 11/8. Demi Ollivierre placed third after defeating a much improved Tessa Shallow-King 9/11, 13/11, 12/10/13/11.
The tables were turned this year in the Menâs Open A Division as two new faces battled for positions 1 and 2. Jules Snagg defeated Kevin Bailey to claim the title with scores of 11/8,4/11,12/10,11/9. Third place went to last yearâs finalist Kevin Hannaway who won by default over injured Paul Cyrus. Fifth position went to Romario Constance who overcame Collin Alexander 11/5, 11/4, 8/11, 13/15, 11/6.
Brief remarks were made by Minister of Sports, Frederick Stevenson who admitted seeing the game for the first time. He congratulated the SVG Squash Association on their success in the regional tournaments and for securing the Association of the Year Award for 2010 in the National Sports Awards.
The National Squash Team was selected to represent St.Vincent and the Grenadines in the Senior OECS Championships to be held in St.Vincent from June 9th – 12th, 2011. Players are Leroy Lewis, Keith Boyea, James Bentick, Jules Snagg, Kevin Bailey, Kevin Hannaway, Paul Cyrus, Romario Constance, Greta Primus, Demi Ollivierre, Tessa Shallow-King, Deirdre Myers, and Vonnie Roudette. Sherian Slater will not participate in the tournament due to previous commitments.
