The three, all females, Reneca Matthews, La Fleur Crichton and Kadisha Andrews, earned the top places in the St. Vincent and the Grenadines leg.
First place winner, Matthews, a Grade Six pupil of the Kingstown Preparatory School, depicts an encompassing Cricket character, with the red ball carrying a broad smile, characterizing the joy which the sport brings, the arms, represented by two bats, with the feet depicted by the stumps.
Second place winner Crichton, of the Dr. JP Eustace Memorial Secondary, shows an eagle, which signifies the strength and the soaring to great heights to take West Indies Cricket, back to the top.
Matthews, also a student of the Dr. JP Eustace Memorial, who placed third in the local contest among the schools here, entered her mascot as a Tiger, named after West Indies batsman, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, whose nickname is âTigerâ. Her depiction is likened to the aggression of the animal and the sport.
All three winners were awarded with their prizes at a brief ceremony last week Wednesday, April 13, at the local branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia, a partner of the WICB, and sponsor of the Kiddy Cricket in the West Indies.
Local coordinator of the Kiddy Cricket Programme, Stanley Hinds, said it was a difficult to separate the top places, as they all exhibited good artistic creations.
The Kiddy Cricket Mascot Competition ran throughout the Caribbean from January 1 to February 18. The competition was launched to find the new âfront manâ for the programme as the long standing mascot âClarence the Crabâ hangs up his costume and passes the torch over to a new fun loving cricket mascot.
The overall winner will be announced at the end of this month. (RT)
