President of the SVG Cycling Union Trevor Bailey made this revelation last week Thursday, April 14, at the Xpert Computer Center Conference Room, as he addressed the Closing Ceremony of a Level Two Technical Cycling Course, mounted by his organization and funded by Olympic Solidarity.
Bailey revealed that finding suitable land space was the hindrance between availability and realization, and called on central government to assist in this regard.
Bailey stated that a BMX Track was the way to go in the short term, as the roads here do not lend themselves to proper training by road cyclists.
The SVG Cycling Union President also disclosed that his organization will be embarking on taking Cycling back into the schools, as he experienced as a youngster growing up.
Apart from the inadequate facilities, Bailey identified the lack of finance as another obstacle to the progress of the sport here.
However, Director of Physical Education and Sports Nelson Hillocks, whilst agreeing with Bailey, was philosophical, and implored the coaches: âDo not let what you donât have deter you.â
Instead, Hillocks advised the coaches to make full use of the limited resources available to them to help carry the sport forward.
Hillocks told the coaches present to make certain that the ten days of knowledge gained, during which they work with the schools, work with their communities, and make full use of the expertise they were taught by the course director, Houshang Amiri.
Hillocksâ comments came against the norm over the years, in which several courses are held, persons attend, get the knowledge, the necessary time off from their employers, gear etc. , get the certification and do little thereafter.
Hillocks was deputizing for Minister of National Mobilisation, Culture, Youth, Sports etc. Frederick Stephenson. (RT)
