This sentiment is being shared by Central Kingstown’s Area Representative St. Claire Leacock and Senator Elvis Charles. They also recalled the many footballers that were produced by the community.

The views were expressed last Sunday, at the Redemption Sharpes Playing Field, which saw the Opening Ceremony of the Central Kingstown Constituency Nine- A -Side Football Tournament and a competitive match.

The ceremony was addressed by former Parliamentary representative for Central Kingstown Conrad Sayers, Leacock, Charles and Elder Henry.

Spokesperson of the organizing committee Romancia Williams-Regis, told SEARCHLIGHT that one of the main objectives of the competition was to bring back some level of unity to the community, which has been rocked by criminal activities.

Cognizant that there have been several organizing committees which have administrated competitions in the past, Williams-Regis said her committee wants it to be an annual affair.

Williams-Regis said her organization, which also includes Clinton John, Colin Bonadie, Claudius Millington, Martian King, Tyrone Prince and Jason Barker, is endeavouring to keep party politics out of the competition.

She cited this as another divisive factor confronting the constituency.

Williams-Regis stated that the competition this year will see a spread of teams, as they have invited guest teams from East and West Kingstown.

The invitees are Top Roseau, winner of the Sion Hill Inter Village Competition, Bottom Town, Ottley Hall, Montrose United and Foreign Base, which is primarily a youth outfit.

Sixteen teams divided evenly into two zones are vying for supremacy.

In Zone A are Montrose United, Foreign Base, Trigger Ridge/ Holliwood, Bottom Town, Ottley Hall, Police, Avenues and Top Roseau.

In Zone B are Richmond Hill, Largo Height, Kingstown Park, Rocks, Plan, Green Hill Major FC, Central and Computec Spurs Bottom Sharpes.

Green hill Major FC came out of the blocks well, as they beat Bottom Sharpes 3-1, as the competition began in earnest.

Two matches are scheduled daily, at the Sharpes Playing Field and the Green Hill Playing Field. (RT)
