Competition is expected in distances of 60M and 200M in the Under-14, Under-17, Under-19 and Open categories.

Among the participants, there should be a field of athletes from the North Leeward area, who were recently introduced to the hurdles, through their regular Saturday mornings developmental meets. These sessions were conducted by TASVG Technical Director Gideon Labban, experienced Track and Field Coach and Technical Official Woodrow Williams and Peace Corps volunteer Mike Dolan.

The holding of such a Hurdles Classic is also a means of assessing the work done by coaches who, in August last year, were drilled in the techniques of mounting the hurdles, by IAAF certified coaches Jamaican Lenford Levy and our own Gideon Labban.

Twenty coaches then participated in a Level Two, two-week International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) Coaches Education and Certification System (CECS) intensive training exercise in multi -events of 64 hours duration. The sessions involved both theoretical and practical methodologies.

The participants were drawn from mainly coaches and Physical Education teachers in the secondary schools, as well as current and immediate past national athletes.

This Saturday’s event follows on the heels of other successful mini meets and preludes the much anticipated Relay Classic set for the Victoria Park, next week Saturday, February 26.

Meanwhile, anticipation is brewing that come March 31, when the finals of the annual Inter Secondary Schools Meet is held at the Arnos Vale Playing Field, Hurdles events could be on the day’s programme. (RT)
