All systems in place for Digicel Caribbean Cup

Despite the inclement weather the island has been experiencing over the past four days, everything is in place for the hosting of Group B of the Digicel Caribbean Cup here, from tomorrow, Wednesday.{{more}}

Making this known was President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation (SVGFF), Joseph Delves, as he briefed the media on Monday, October 4, at Digicel’s Conference Room.

Delves said that the three visiting teams: Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis and Montserrat, were expected to have arrived on Monday, along with match officials and Match Commissioners.

The Football head envisaged large crowds on the three nights: October 6, 8 and 10, at the matches at the Victoria Park.

He said that the hosting the group is an expensive undertaking, as the local Football body has to foot the bills of the visitors’ accommodation, meals and internal transportation.

Delves is urging Vincentians to attend the matches in their numbers and not only support their local team, Vincy Heat, but help in defraying the cost.

The Football President detailed that other arrangements such as dressing rooms and other attending accommodations have also been put in place.

Tomorrow’s opening fixture pits St. Kitts and Nevis against Barbados, then St. Vincent and the Grenadines versus Montserrat.

On Friday, St. Kitts and Nevis play Montserrat and St. Vincent and the Grenadines take on Barbados.

The final day, Sunday, Barbados play Montserrat, with the Vincentians meeting the Kittians, to finish the group Matches begining 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm respectively.

Also speaking at the press conference was Digicel’s Public Relations Manager for the Eastern Caribbean, Jerry George, who disclosed that the matches in the competition will be televised later on cable networks such as ESPN, FOX and Sky Sports.

George said that it was the opportune time for footballers in the region to show their wares and market themselves to international clubs.

George said that during the three nights of competition here, Digicel will sponsor giveaways to patrons.

Among them he listed was a Kick for Cash promotion, as well as other offers such as Digicel bags, thunder sticks, tee shirts, bandanas and footballs.

The St. Vincent and the Grenadines group is one of four groups in the preliminary round.

Twenty teams will contest this year’s competition, which comes to an end with the Finals in Martinique from November 26 to December 5. (RT)
