Bequia Basketball Tourney concludes
The 12th Annual Bequia Basketball Tournament concluded last Saturday night at the Clive Tannis Hard court in Bequia, with the finals of the First and Second Divisions.{{more}}
Rising Stars Two emerged winners in the Second Division, as they finished with a 2-0 sweep of their opponents Young Blazers.
After handing them a 62-59 defeat in game one, Rising Stars Two completed their march to the divisionâs silverware, with a 71-69 triumph in game two on Saturday.
Rising Starsâ Nyron Boucher poured in a game high 33 points, while Miguel Mc Kree scored 15 points and had 13 rebounds for Young Blazers.
Boucher was awarded the Second Division overall Most Valuable Player (MVP), to go with that of the final series. Boucher, a point guard, was his teamâs MVP, and recorded the most points, 130 from 6 games.
Other winners in the Second Division were Xavier Cunningham, also of the Stars Two, who had the most rebounds with 115 in 6 games; Miguel McKree who was adjudged the Young Blazersâ MVP, and Jamal Hutchins, also of Young Blazers had the most assists, with 18 in 6 games.
Likewise, Duke beat East Blazers 91 to 84, to take the best of three series 2-0. Duke won game one, 89 – 68. Jonas King sank 30 points and pulled down 16 rebounds for Duke, with Michael Penniston scoring 20 points for East Blazers.
King was adjudged the tournamentâs MVP, the MVP of the three game final series, and was the obvious choice for team Dukeâs MVP. He also captured the most points award, netting 219 points from 10 games. Keithroy Lavia also of the champion team collected the Most Assists award for his 25, from 10 games.
Keon Mc Fee of East Blazers had the most steals 32; while Warriazâs MVP Derenzo Joseph and team mate Keon Skinner had the most rebounds, 127 and blocks, 17 respectively.
Mustique Iconâs Gemey Richardson was his teamâs MVP, while Keylon Edwards of second place East Blazers was their MVP. Bequia Techâs Danroy Bess was awarded his teamâs MVP, and for Gladiatorz, it was Cosmus Hackshaw.
Mustique Icons placed third, Bequia Tech Rising Stars finished fourth, Warriaz placed fifth, and Gladiatorz finished in the sixth position.
Among the developmental grouping, Hornets took the Under 16 title defeating Young Wizards in two straight games. Fifteen year old Delwin Simmons dominated the young contingent of future Bequia ballers and was named the Under 16âs Overall MVP. Simmons who was also his teamâs MVP, and for the Final series MVP, netted most points, 37, had the most rebounds, 30, and most blocks, 5.
Jadeja Hutchins was awarded the Most Improved Player, and received the most assists, 6 and most steals, 16. Young Wizards finished second with Lenroy Lavia being adjudged his teamâs MVP.
According to a release from the Bequia Basketball Association, this yearâs competition did not have a single disciplinary issue during its eight weeks.
Kudos were poured on St. Vincent & the Grenadinesâ lone FIBA Certified Referee Shem Ollivierre, who trained the competitionâs officials, and maintained a high standard, which organisers believed contributed to the high level of sportsmanship.
