‘Vincentians artists can compete anywhere’ – Jones-Chin
There is enough artistic talent here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines to compete on the world stage.{{more}}
That is the view of the facilitator of the just concluded National Olympic Academyâs Education and Culture Commission Art for Sports workshops, Collette Jones-Chin.
Speaking to SEARCHLIGHT last Saturday afternoon at the St. Josephâs Convent Kingstown, following the closing ceremony of the workshops, Jones-Chin said: âThe work I see children do here, they can compete and do better with what I see internationally.â
Jones-Chin was specifically speaking of the various art competitions that are held during each Olympiad.
She said that the work that was produced by the participants in the three weekend sessions of the workshops was proof of the local talent which exists.
Explaining the reasons for the workshops, Jones-Chin sated: âIt was basically for people to become aware of sports art.â
During the workshop, the 48 participants were exposed to several varieties of art and came up with pieces depicting sporting events and individuals.
Additionally, the participants who ranged from age 8 up to adulthood utilised art in logo designs and the web page illustrations.
Pieces were also done using paper collage, pencil and charcoal drawing and cartoon drawing.
Jones-Chin said that every aspect of the art done during the workshops was sport related and further emphasized that a person may not be an athlete but can make a sporting expression through the medium of art.
Convinced that the workshops were a success, Jones-Chin recommended follow up, this time for teachers of art.
She suggested this based on her experience as an assessor/ marker for some time at the Caribbean Examinations Council level. (RT)
