The community has always been desirous of obtaining their own playing field to facilitate the further development of their various football teams. This became even more of a priority when the Avenues United senior male team advanced to the second round of the CFU Club Championship played earlier this year; this after they had given a good account of themselves in the first round.
Years of negotiation between the Avenues Club and the Anglican Church, financial assistance from the Social Investment Fund (SIF) and input from the Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Council has finally paid off and the Avenues United Sports Facility, which is located adjacent to the Anglican Church in Kingstown and the back of the Bishops College Kingstown, is almost ready to accommodate physical sporting activity.
During an inspection of the facility this week, Player/Coach of the Avenues United Football Team Sean Dopwell, senior player Dwayne Sandy and administrator/advisor Marlon Stephenson were all in high praise of the partnerships which combined to get the field to the advanced stage of preparation. Full time groundsman Albert Ash, who was facilitated by the Ministry of Sports, was complimented for his work since being assigned over the past month.
Minister of State in the Ministry of Sport, Cecil McKie, expressed pleasure in being part of the process of the realisation of the playing facility. He committed to work along with the Management Committee, towards the realization of the short to medium term plans for the further enhancement and development of the facility into a field to host football friendlies, as well as, serve as a family outing area for persons from the community. The National Sports Council also committed its human and equipment resources to assist with the development of the facility.
The new playing facility will also be used by the School for Children with Special Needs during the day on a daily basis and will also accommodate use by other schools and communities in close proximity. It will, however, be managed by the management committee of the Avenues United Club.
