41 Digicel customers get trip of a lifetime

Digicel, the best value mobile operator in the Caribbean, Central America and the Pacific, and official regional broadcast sponsor in the Caribbean of the FIFA World Cup 2010, treated 41 loyal customers to a trip of a lifetime {{more}}to watch the FIFA World Cup final 2010 in South Africa.

The 41 lucky customers not only saw the historic Final where two European teams played for the first time on non-European soil, but also had the chance to enjoy a country steeped in culture and history. The team spent a day on a safari tour in the Pilensburg National Park and enjoyed lunch in a traditional Shebeen – a famous meeting house in South Africa where historically people came to meet and discuss political and social issues. The team also visited the famous Sun City resort in Rustenburg and enjoyed a “Braai” dinner – a South African barbeque of local cuisine with a tribal group entertaining the team with traditional singing and dancing.

The trip – which included all flights and transfers from the winners’ home countries to South Africa, accommodation and food in a luxury lodge on a game reserve, spending money, a safari tour, official team gear and tickets to the Final – came to a total value of US$30,000 per person. The winners – all loyal Digicel customers from 24 countries across the Caribbean and Pacific – won the fantastic prize in one of the various Digicel promotions which ran in the months leading up to the FIFA World Cup 2010.

Digicel Suriname winner, Judith Ann Klein, who took her son, Miquel Patric – neither of whom had ever been on a plane before – said: “This has been one of the most amazing things I have ever done in my life. I have been a loyal Digicel customer since they launched in Suriname in 2007, but I never thought they would be taking me to South Africa to experience this amazing city and see the World Cup Final. I had to keep pinching myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming!”

The winner from Digicel St. Kitts and Nevis was Michael Powell, former Vice President for Caribbean Tourism Organization. Speaking of his time in South Africa, Mr Powell said: “I have been fortunate enough to visit many places in my life, but this is my first time to South Africa – a place I have always wanted to see.

“Thanks to Digicel, we experienced some of the great cultural and historical attractions – as well as witnessing the World Cup 2010 final – an historic event in itself,” continued Powell.

Digicel Group Marketing Operations Director, Kieran Foley, said: “As part of our promise to deliver the best value to our customers, Digicel is proud to have brought 41 of our loyal customers on this trip of a lifetime to South Africa. Digicel is the biggest supporter of football in the CONCACAF region and with that we are delighted to have given our customers the chance to witness the biggest football event in the world.”

Digicel has been involved in a wide range of football initiatives designed to support the development of football in the Caribbean and Central America over the last six years. Today, Digicel has operations in 32 countries worldwide and sponsors 17 National Football Federations and leagues, as well as the Digicel Caribbean Cup and the Copa de Naciones Digicel in Central America.

Digicel also spearheads the Digicel Kick Start Clinics in the Caribbean and Central America, which offer young footballers the opportunity to train with renowned footballers such as Liverpool legends, John Barnes and Ian Rush, as well as the chance to spend one week with UK Premier League Clubs, Sunderland AFC and Manchester City.
