Boxing bursting with young talent

Twenty-eight young boxers were given four days of instruction last week, at the Bishop’s College Hard Court, as the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Boxing Association (SVGBA) held good on a promise to continuously seek out new talent.{{more}}

The four-day camp ran from Monday, August 24, to Thursday, August 27.

The boxers, who ranged from age 11 to 16, were netted from the association’s Talent Identification Programme. The budding boxers were drawn from the communities of Greiggs and Layou, as these areas showed the most interest during the association’s outreach programme.

Funded by the National Olympic Committee, the prospective boxers were under the guidance of national Boxing Coach Junior Assing, who was assisted by Reynold Smith and Leyland Robinson.

Apart from fine tuning the basics of the sport, the participants were lectured on discipline by Wayne Williams, with Sonya Lewis briefing them on Nutrition.

President of the SVGBA Winston Telesford told SEARCHLIGHT that the four-day exercise was part of his organisation’s thrust to ensure posterity in the sport.

He was, however, saddened that the camp had to be done outdoors as the association’s home base, the Campden Park Community Centre, is unsuitable, both in terms of space and its state of disrepair.

He revealed that an alternative indoor venue was sought, but not secured.

Telesford, though, was thankful that the school’s hard court was made available, and they were blessed by favourable weather.

He promised that his association would continue to shape the young boxers’ talents in a systematic developmental process. (RT)
