Staged at the Kingstown Anglican School Annex, the trio of Alphonso Richards, Felix Richards and Niall Pitt proved too good for their counterparts from the Faith Temple Church. Alphonso Richards whipped Ansis Pope 11-9, 9-11, 11-5. Felix Richards got the better of Giles Garraway Sr. 11-4, 11-3, and Pitt completed the rout with a 16-14, 11-5 disposal of Giles Garraway Jr.
In the Menâs Singles Final, Calvin Seales had a hard fought win from the improved Dwayne Nicholls 11-5, 11-6, 11-13, 11-9. It was Sealesâ first win at any level of Table Tennis. The 56-year-old Seales, a Vincentian who resides in the United States of America, said he uses the sport as a form of recreation during his lunch breaks at the New York Transit at Coney Island, where he is employed.
He told SEARCHLIGHT that he had fun playing in the competition, granted he was mainly here on vacation, and entered just to keep fit, but was surprised at the level of keen rivalry. Behind Seales and Nicholls was Pope, who finished third. Felix Richards was adjudged the Most Valuable Player in the championships.
Eight-year-old Juan Burgin, also of the Kingstown Baptist Church, got a special award for being the youngest player in the Championships. The Layou Miracle Church docked in third and the Church of the Nazarene was fourth. The other competing teams were KBC Team Two and Advent Stars.
Meanwhile, chief organiser of the championships, Sean Stanley, said that the main objective of the inaugural edition was to bring the members of the various denominations in a setting of camaraderie. He believes that this was achieved and envisages a bigger and more competitive outing in 2010. He revealed that the championships will be held around the same period next year.
Stanley hopes women will take part next time around . (RT)
