The competition, which took place on Saturday, June 20, saw the Vincentians competing within a strong field of contestants from around the world. Williams related that it was an âamazingâ experience, from which he learnt much. He placed 2nd in the same competition last year, but this year stormed his way to the top spot. âI stepped up my game this year!â
Williams, who currently works as a Fitness Instructor, has hopes of taking part in the World Championships set to take place in the USA on November 10, 2009. Allan Hanson also intends to participate in this upcoming competition. Both men agreed that their participation is dependent on how much sponsorship they can acquire between now and November.
Hanson described his participation in the competition as âa learning experienceâ, and expressed how proud he was of his achievement because he had been absent from competing for 10 years. He won Junior Mr SVG in 1993, and is currently self-employed as a Health and Fitness Specialist and a certified Fitness Trainer.
Williams admitted that finding sponsorship for their trip to Barbados had been a struggle, but they managed in the end. Hanson was extremely grateful to C.K Greaves Supermarket, Aunt Jobeâs Supermarket and Dental Arts Clinic for their sponsorship. Williams and Hanson also thanked the SVG Bodybuilding Federation for its contributions and support along the way.
Both men are hoping that their excellent performance in Barbados will encourage government bodies and businesses within the private sector to financially assist their participation in the World Championship later this year.
Hanson also confided that he wants to host body building events in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and is keen to recruit local, female participants. He believes that with the right promotion such events can attract regional and international participation. âIt can increase tourism for SVG.â
