Windwards take second place

Never since their dream start in 1982 as a single regional cricket unit, when the Windwards finished second in the then Shell Shield, the symbol of West Indies Cricket supremacy, and a repeat performance in 1983, have the ‘Cinderellas’ of regional cricket been able to finish close to the top.{{more}}

But Rawl Lewis and his troops did so after 26 years, when they finished second behind Jamaica in the WICB sponsored George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy which ended last Tuesday.

The Windwards, despite losing outright to the Leewards, earned four points for winning on first innings, to pip their opponents in the final tally.

Set 249 to win, the Windwards lower order rallied from 110 for 7, to be all out for 220.

Leading the charge was Shane Shillingford, who hit 58, and Deighton Butler who scored 43. Lyndon James made 50. Gavin Tonge took 5 for 44, Anthony Martins, 3 for 36, and Brent De Freitas, 2 for 77.

The Leewards batted first and made 243. Keiron Powell, 88, Tonito Willett, 61 not out, and Runako Morton, 53. Rawl Lewis, 2 for 3, Mervyn Matthew, 3 for 43, Kenroy Peters, 2 for 64, and Shillingford, 2 for 68.

The Windwards, led by Lewis’ 81 not out, Mervyn Matthew, 35, and Johnson Charles, 35, reached 271. Martins, 4 for 54, De Freitas, 2 for 29 and Willett, 2 for 59.

In their second innings, the Leewards Devon Thomas, 73, Montcin Hodge, 58, Codville Rodgers, 33. Shillingford, 3 for 31, Lewis, 3 for 75, and Butler, 3 for 84.

But Guyana remained at the bottom of the table. Royson Crandon hit 136 not out, Kevin Stoute, 3 for 49 and Ryan Hinds, 2 for 53.

Stoute made 186 and Hinds 100, when his team batted and totalled 396. Davendra Bishoo took 4 for 125 bowling for Guyana.

Sewnarine Chattergoon compiled 111 and Asad Fudadin 41, as the host reached 360. Nickolai Charles, 5 for 99, and Stoute, 2 for 15.

Set 299, Barbados reached 67 for 1, when the match was called off.

And, the Combined Campuses and Colleges(CCC) beat Trinidad and Tobago by 63 runs. Set 174 to win T & T folded for 110. Khishma Catlin took 4 for 56 and Kavesh Kantasingh, 3 for 17, with Jason Mohammed topscoring with 33.

The CCC 153. Kevin Mc Lean hit a robust 40 .Ravi Rampaul had 6 for 44.

Trinidad and Tobago replied with 154, a slender one run lead. Mohammed hit 30. Shevron Penco, 3 for 32, Catlin, 3 for 54 and Ryan Austin, 3 for 60.

CCC made 174 in their second innings. Man of the Match, Kyle Corbin, 70. Imran Kahn, 4 for 36, Rampaul, 3 for 44, Amit Jagguarnauth, 2 for 35.

The final standings show Jamaica 106, the Windwards, 79, the Leewards, 77, Trinidad and Tobago, 70, CCC, 60, Barbados, 60, and Guyana, 33. (RT)
