Denis George was the menace for Grenada, as he spun his way to match figures of 11 for 34, to send St. Vincent and the Grenadines to a humiliating six-wicket defeat on Wednesday at Portsmouth.

George, 24, a left arm orthodox spinner, grabbed 5 for 9, in St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ first innings, then followed up with 6 for 25 in the second.

Batting first, St. Vincent and the Grenadines was toppled for 69. Rawle Lewis, 3 for 23, and Camilus Alexander, 2 for 3, assisted George in the destruction.

But to show the weakness of Windwards Cricket, Grenada was dismissed for 86, with Vice Captain Deighton Butler taking 7 for 18, and Orlanzo Jackson, 2 for 18.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines, behind by 17, made 100 in their second innings. Miles Bascombe topscored with 33. Set 84 to win, Grenada, too, stuttered, but reached safe, losing four wickets in the process. Out of favour West Indies opener Devon Smith smashed 51. Kenroy Peters snared 4 for 12.

In familiar circumstances of miscalculation, St. Vincent and the Grenadines had to settle for a no decision against Dominica in the opening round of matches.

After labouring to post 277 for 8 declared on a rain affected first day, Sunday, with Bascombe, 73, Alston Bob, 63 not out, Browne, 46, and Donwell Hector, 28, the hosts held on to 119 for 8. Ray Casimir, 3 for 69, and his brother Shane Shilingford, 2 for 65, bowling for the Dominicans. Ezekiel Francis made 62, in Dominica’s total. Peters was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 30, Keiron Cottoy, 2 for 18, and Norlan Williams, 2 for 31.

In a comedy of errors, the match between St.Lucia and Grenada was a one day affair, as the Grenadians arrived in the Nature Isle minus their luggage and one player.

St. Lucia made 122. Grenada replied with 125 for 4, winning on first innings.

In the other match which ended on Wednesday, Dominica humbled St. Lucia by ten wickets to set up a virtual final against Grenada. Dominica declared at 218 for 9. Junior Jervier, 54 not out, Samuel Mitchell, 35.

Darren Sammy, 3 for 26, and Gary Mathurin, 3 for 52. St. Lucia responded with 72 all out. Shilingford, 6 for 22, and Casimir, 4 for 16. Asked to follow on, St. Lucia fared better, making 146. Shervin Charles was the topscorer with 32. Martin Matthew had 4 for 28, Shillingford, 3 for 30, and Kaveem Hodge, 2 for 5. Dominica scored 2 for no loss to push their tally of points to 16, two fewer than Grenada, as they, too, square off for the title, also today and tomorrow. (RT)
