Arnos Vale Football League off on a bad foot
Minutes after Alston Jack petitioned the Almighty for an accident free 2008 Ju-c /Pepsi Arnos Vale Football League, a goal mouth incident left Orlando Williams, of Je Belle FC, with his left leg broken.{{more}}
It was not a welcomed opening for the League, which did not see any action in 2006 and 2007.
A late start because of rain saw the opening ceremony cut short. At that point, Michael John, Chairman of the organising committee, Director of Physical Education and Sports Nelson Hillocks and Ian Allen, of the National Sports Council, had given their remarks.
The intended inspection, with just about half of the registered teams on show, never materialized, as a heavy shower chased the officials off the field.
However, during the half time break of the feature match, Commissioner of Police Keith Miller and President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation Joseph Delves gave their remarks.
Miller stressed the issue of the footballers displaying a high level of discipline and offered a trophy to the Most Disciplined Team in the Competition.
Delves informed the gathering that the sport in its present form cannot be business as usual, as some restructuring is needed.
Previously, known as the Ju-C Arnos Vale League, sponsors Bottlers St. Vincent Limited have added the Pepsi brand and doubled the sponsorship from $5000 to $10,000.
And, it was competition from the get go, as Je Belle FC and Avenues United sparred each other to a nil-nil draw, in a Premier Division fixture, in at times pouring rain.
Paradise Investments Greiggs, Nemwil Hope International, St. Vincent Motors System 3, Samba FC, Toni Stores Jugglers, Pastures United, Stingers and Busta Prospect United complete the team Premier Division line up.
They will compete in a round robin league format.
The 12 teams in the First Division are placed in two groups, with the two top teams playing off for the title.
The newly introduced Under-17 Division is still open to registration, and will get going in a weekâs time.(RT)
