More discipline needed in Netball says Snagg
Permanent Secretary (ag) in the Ministry of National Mobilisation, Youth, Sports etc, Rosita Snagg, is calling for greater discipline to be exercised by local Netballers.{{more}}
Snagg made her plea as she addressed the Closing and Presentation Ceremony of the 2008 Digicel National Netball Tournament last Sunday evening at the Kingstown Netball Centre.
The Permanent Secretary (ag) reminded the Netballers that discipline forms an integral part of oneâs personal development, and requested of them to work harder and attend practice in order to enhance their game.
She said that her Ministry was willing to partner with them, but they must have an inclination to be committed to the sport.
Snagg implored the Netballers to strive to regain the lost ground and get back to the heights that this country once reached.
Disappointed by the poor turn out of teams at Sundayâs ceremony, Snagg urged them to show the same fervour at the closing as they do at the opening, when they are all well represented.
Interestingly, several teams, including some big names, were absent from last Sundayâs ceremony.
Investigations by SEARCHLIGHT revealed that the teams were contacted and informed of the closing ceremony.
But, one wondered if Snaggâs address had any bearing on the ladies, as many chose to be oblivious to her pronouncements, engaging in continuous chat.
Snagg may have had her cue, as even during the rendition of the National Anthem, many of the Netballers displayed scant respect for the symbol.
Her plea certainly fell on some deaf ears, as she was also within earshot of some unsavoury comments decorated by expletives from some seasoned players as they left the Kingstown Netball Centre, following the ceremony.
The national Netball Club Tournament has for several years now been plagued by the increasing level of ill discipline among spectators and players. Despite promises to get tough on the offenders, much has not been done.
President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association, Doris Mc Intosh, glossed over the issue, but once again indicated that no team will be allowed in the 2009 tournament unless they become full fledged clubs.
The other speaker at last Sundayâs ceremony was Edmund Joachim, who gave brief remarks on behalf of sponsors, Digicel. (RT)
