Calliaqua Anglican takes Inter-Primary Tennis title
The Calliaqua Anglican School is the winner of both the Boys and Girls Divisions in the Finals of the 2008 Digicel Inter-Primary School Tennis Competition.
The Finals were originally to be held on June 27th but were postponed until July 2nd due to rain. They were played at the St.Vincent and the Grenadines National Tennis Centre at Villa.{{more}}
During the Finals, the Calliaqua Anglican School boys defeated the lads from the Owia Primary School, 4-1. Ocean Carr, of Calliaqua Anglican, beat Orlando Browne, of Owia Primary, 12-9, while Kyrese Oliver (Calliaqua) overcame Jaldini John (Owia), 12-3. Raenaldo Thomas beat Chad Childs, 12-6, while Jamal Dewer won his game against Richie Sayers, 12-0. Jquan Pollard, of Owia Primary, was the only male who managed to win his sets. He beat Tyrone Cuffy, 12-1.
Meanwhile, the Calliaqua Primary girls came up against members of the Byera Primary Schoolâs team and beat them, 3-2. Jennia Walters won her game against Kanisha Lampkin, 12-4, while her team-mate Rachel Ollivierre beat her opponent Carlene Grant, 12-8, and Sharia Ashton beat Niesha Douglas, 12-10. The only games won by Byera were by default and those were taken by Josene Ellis and Zaria James.
Although Owia lost to Calliaqua, 4-1, two Owia youths did not go home empty handed. Awards for the Most Valuable Player Male (MVP) went to Orlando Browne, of the Owia Primary, while the most promising player trophy went to Jquan Pollard, also from the Owia Primary School. He was the only male from Owia to win his sets. The MVP Girls award was taken by Kanisha Lampkin of the Byera Primary School.
Twenty-one schools took part in the Digicel sponsored event. They competed in six zones – namely Leeward, Windward, Central Windward, Marriaqua, St. George and Kingstown. Eight teams, including both sexes, made it to the quarter finals. A total of 285 children from Grades 2 and 3 played in the finals.
Chairman of the Tennis Junior Development Committee, Peter Nanton, described the tournament as excellent, âeverybody had a lot of funâ. Thanking Digicel, he added that with Digicelâs continued support, the tournament will again be played next year.
