Football Masters rolling ball

Footballers of yesteryear are getting a chance to show the younger generation what it was like many moons ago when they took the football spotlight.{{more}}

Last Sunday, the hands of time were rolled anti-clockwise as these footballers donned their gear in an impressive and colourful opening ceremony at the Victoria Park, as the SVG Over 35 Organisation began its National Masters Tournament.

And unlike other opening ceremonies, all fifteen participating teams were represented.

President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation St. Clair Leacock, in addressing the ceremony, welcomed the ‘young’ footballers to another competition.

However, Leacock, while grateful to the National Lotteries Authority for the use of the refurbished Victoria Park, chided them for not allowing more days of football activities at the venue.

At present, the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Football Federation, which is staging the National Club Championship, has its use on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, with the Over 35’s assigned Monday and Saturday.

But according to the football boss, this is not enough as football, in its current form, demands more playing time at such venues.

Also speaking at the ceremony were Anthony Dennie of the National Lotteries Authority and Glenroy Caesar, President of the Over 35 organisation.

And the many persons who turned out on Sunday afternoon into the night were treated to some good football in the shortened but tactful Soccerama competition.

In the end, Menelik was left standing as the unbeaten team. Also participating in Sunday’s opening was the Santa Cruz Masters of Trinidad and Tobago.

On Monday, the competition began in earnest.

Sharpes stopped Mwando 7-0, while Menelik went under to Legends 1-3, and African Tref defeated Layou 1-0.

The other teams participating are Older Boys, Calliaqua, Sion Hill, North Leeward, Avenues, Vintage F.C, Temple Masters and Je Belle.

Another three matches are fixtured for next Monday at the Victoria Park.
