Young-the Star on Silver’s lining
Sophia Young led the San Antonio Silver Stars to their first ever Western Conference Final of the WNBA last Monday night.
Young, the star forward for San Antonio, hit a game high of 26 points to edge out Sacramento 80-78 in the last of three semi final matches.{{more}}
Playing 37 of the 40 minutes, Young also had six rebounds, two assists, three steals and one block shot.
San Antonio finished off the series 2-1, after losing the first match 65-86, but bounced back to level things in the second with an 86-61 triumph.
The 23-year-old from Layou in the Central Leeward constituency had an average of 16.1 points per game in the three match series of the play offs.
The Silver Stars completed the regular season with a 20-14 win- loss ratio as against Sacramentoâs 19-15.
Youngâs team was second behind Phoenix, who recorded an impressive 23-11 run in the regular season.
The Silvers Stars win against Sacramento set up their final berth against Phoenix, who closed out Seattle in straight games, 101-84 and 95-89.
The two were set to meet last night in the first match for the decisive Western Conference title.
But the Silver Stars have not fared well against them this season, losing three of the four match ups.
The Silver Stars went under to Phoenix, 72-81, 85-97 and 79-84 .Their lone triumph was an 87-77 win.
Young will be looking to Becky Hammond to lead San Antonioâs historic feat of reaching the final, even more historic than their debut year at the play offs in the teamâs ten years of existence.
Hammond, 30, a veteran of 255 WNBA matches, emerged from the play offs with a 19.3 average points per game.
Young is only into her second year. She joined the Silver Stars last year, following her college years at Baylor.(RT)
