Saints bank on Currency

A top all round performance by St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Windwards opening batsman Rommel Currency was the catalyst for Eat-Rite Saints’ win over Bequia in the National Lotteries Neil Williams 20/20 cricket competition last weekend.{{more}}

Currency had a favourable transaction with the bat, hitting 95. He deposited 10 sixes over the ropes, along with 4 fours. His innings came to an end when he tried to clear the boundary for a fourth consecutive six, to bring up his century in style.

His efforts propelled Saints to 239 for 5 off their 20 overs, with Roger Gibson making 38, Kishorn Shallow, 32, and St. Clair Dickson, 31.

Currency, a student at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Barbados, pursuing a degree in Accounting, then had good purchase on the pitch, taking 3 for 15, when Bequia batted.

The home team fell for 191 off 19.1 overs. Currency’s father Walford Ambris supported with the ball, taking 3 for 32.

Bequia’s reply was helped by Keon Mofford’s 32, Alroy Hoyte, 29, and former national football cum cricketer Burton Forde, 26.

It was on the rebound for Saints who, the previous day, Saturday, lost to Police One on a faster scoring rate in a rain affected fixture.

Saints made 111 for 2 off 20 overs. Felix Greaves struck 54 not out. Police One reached 81 for 4 off 10 overs. Gosnel Cupid, 28 not out, and Dominic Stowe, 24 not out.

Police One doubled up with a second victory, scoring a 3 wicket win over Unique Warriors. Facing 17 overs, Unique Warriors reached 127 for 7. Christopher Campbell topscored with 43. Uroy Farrell took 3 for 23 bowling for Police One. In reply, they made 128 for 7 in 16.1 overs. Elgin Richards hit 35. Ian Bushay, 3 for 29, and Aaron Bascombe, 2 for 24, bowling for Unique Warriors.

In a close finish between two of the more established teams, Radcliffe nipped home with two balls to spare over Rivals. Chasing 84 to win, Radcliffe made heavy weather on a sunny Sunday afternoon at the Sion Hill Playing Field, reaching the target in the last over, losing six wickets in the process. Lynden James led the way with 29 not out. Orlanzo Jackson took 3 for 11, bowling for Rivals.

In establishing Radcliffe’s run chase, Rivals posted 83 all out in 16.1 overs. Drumo Toney was Radcliffe’s best bowler, with 3 for 20.

Also among the heavyweights, Police Two defeated Rivals by 4 wickets. Police Two, 143 for 7 off their 20 overs.Oneil Thomas hit 77. Ian Allen bagged 3 for 16, Dodridge Small, 2 for 13, and Norlan Williams, 2 for 25, bowling for the defending champion.

Victors One stopped at 115 off 19.1 overs. Bertram Stapleton, 28, and Miles Bascombe, 23, were the significant contributors with the bat, as Kenroy Martin’s 4 for 20 and Oneil Baptiste 3 for 29 undermined Victors’ batting.

The other matches that saw outright results were Saints Two over Smashers by six wickets, Spartans over Sion Hill by ten wickets, and Smashers triumphing against North Leeward by default.

Scores: Smashers 70 off 12.1 overs, Saints 71 for 4 in 12.1 overs. Sion Hill reached 37 for 4 in 10 overs versus Spartans, who erased that total racing to 38 without loss in 3.1 overs.

Rain was the winner in the Radcliffe versus Bequia match up, the Police Two versus Sion Hill encounter, as well as the North Leeward versus Victors One fixture.

In the three abandoned fixtures each team received one point.(RT)
