More $ $ in Belair 20/20 Softball Competition
When organisers of the 2007 National Lotteries Authority Top Belair Softball Cricket Competition planned the 24th edition, the winner of the league was to have received $1200. But by the end of last Saturdayâs opening ceremony that first prize bounty had risen to $2000, making it the biggest attraction since the competition began.{{more}}
Making the additional promises of the increased pay out were parliamentary representative for West St. George Mike Browne and a representative of Ruddyâs Electrical Services. Browne pledged an additional $500 to the winning team and the electrical firm $300.
In addition, Browne will donate $300, to the most disciplined team. The winners of these competitions and other awards will be known by December, the scheduled time of completion.
Thirteen of the twenty eight teams were represented at Saturdayâs ceremony and March Past at the Dauphine Playing Field.
One team on show was new entrant RLP Zenga, which walked away with the best dressed team award.
But Zenga was the first to taste the bitterness of defeat at the hands of the defending champion RSVG Police. Sporting a new look outfit Police batted first and were all out for 126 in 19 overs. Darent Williams led the way with 29 and wides equaled his contribution.
Dwight Haywood 3 for 22 and Kendol Buntyn 2 for 15 were the lead bowlers for Zenga.
The debutantes fell short by ten runs making 118 for 7 in their 20 overs. Artis Warren challenged to take Zenga home with his 21, which included 3 sixes. Carlos Baptiste was not out on 20, with 21 wides sent down by Police. Williams was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 20 and Kenneth John 2 for 22 handcuffed Zengaâs batting.
When action continued on Sunday, Clinchers won over ASCO I. Clinchersâ104 was centered around Gerald Gouldâs 36. Rajiv Roberts took 4 for 24 and Osbourne Franklyn 3 for 11, but saw their team dismissed for 66 in response. Carlton John was Clinchersâ best bowler with 4 for 12.
Also recording a victory were Simple Boys over Ruddyâs Electrical. Simple Boys posted 128 with Lex Bute making 50, and Eldon Morris 32. Ruddyâs Electrical were undone by the bowling of Vernardo Primus 2 for 16 and Kentish Phillips 2 for 17 as they reached 89 for 7 in their 20 overs.
Five matches are scheduled this weekend. In action from 1:30 pm tomorrow will be Punishers and Gomea Bombers. The afternoonâs proceeding is completed with the Shot Callers versus Vipers match up.
On Sunday Nex Level meet Under Dogs from 9:30 am. Fair Hall Falcons face Kingstown Hill United from 12:30 pm.
Former champion Novice and Strugglers play each other in the weekendâs feature match, which is set to begin at 3: pm.(RT)
