Governor General hosts cocktail for footballers

Governor General Sir Frederick Ballantyne is hopeful that not only were friendships forged, but that there would be opportunities for football scholarships to Christopher Newport University in Virginia for Vincentian footballers.{{more}}

Sir Frederick was speaking on Tuesday evening at a cocktail he hosted at Government House in honour of a visit by a football team from the University.

While here, the team played two matches against the national under-23 team. The first match, played on Sunday, ended in a 1-1 draw, while the match on Tuesday saw the local lads emerge victorious, winning 3-2.

President of the local Football Federation Senator St. Clair Leacock said that it is a major achievement for our talented young footballers to play against any team in the world, especially when they not only won but were generous enough to give Christopher Newport a goal, during the game played earlier that day.

The visitors from Christopher Newport were given tokens by the Football Federation which included replica team jerseys. The Americans told SEARCHLIGHT that they have thoroughly enjoyed their visit and would be spending the time left touring and seeing some more of our beautiful country.

The function was attended by Acting Prime Minister Sir Louis Straker and Minister of Sport Glen Beache, among others. (VM)
