Will SVG be in the World Netball Championships?

St. Vincent and the Grenadines has been invited to fill a void left in the World Netball Championships to be held in New Zealand from November 10-22 this year.

But will the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association pursue that offer, is another matter.{{more}}

Originally set to be staged in Fiji, the championships had to be shifted to New Zealand because of civil unrest there. Fiji’s participation was merely on the strength of them hosting netball’s showpiece.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines missed out on a place when they finished third in the AFNA qualifiers last year August behind Trinidad and Tobago and host Barbados. The two English Caribbean countries became qualifiers.

SEARCHLIGHT was unable to ascertain from persons in the hierarchy of the netball set up here if this country is making a serious bid to be part of this rare event or have they given it thought.

Cost undoubtedly will be a critical factor for this to materialise as the air fare per person is in the region of $8000. St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ last major netball outing was for the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Australia.

Then, this country had to face powerhouses England, South Africa and New Zealand as well as the competitive Malawi and Fiji.

If St. Vincent and the Grenadines go on the November mission to the south eastern part of the world, they will be the fourth team from the AFNA region, as world ranked Jamaica are also a certain entrant.
