Mc Intosh – ‘Good sense prevailed’

The lights were on, the match officials were in place, spectators turned out in their usual scores, but there was no match.{{more}}

That was the scene at the Kingstown Netball Centre last Monday night, as the much anticipated encounter between the two netball titans Vita Malt Maple and Western Union Mitres was set to come off. That match would have more or less determined the Division One champion.

The mid-court match up between the fleet footed 2006 Sports Personality Saska Diamond of Maple, on vacation after spending her first year at university, and former national captain Halimah De Shong, who has taken a break from nationals as she is currently pursuing her PhD, will have to wait a little longer.

So too is the battle between Maple’s Goal Shoot Skiddy Francis-Crick and Mitres’ Goalkeeper Marcia Gordon.

“Me wan back me money”, remarked one lady, “Ah could ah stay home and do me wuk”, shouted another. While other comments are not fit for publication.

Scheduled for a 5:45 pm start, the match was about to begin one hour later when the decision was made to postpone it.

But President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association told SEARCHLIGHT that the decision to postpone was based on the distance that some of the players had to travel to get home.

“One player lives over the Dry River and that was taken into consideration”, she said.

She alluded to the late arrival of officials and players for early matches that push back the other scheduled matches especially at the Kingstown Netball Centre.

An obviously concerned Mc Intosh said that she will be looking into getting more matches played at Arnos Vale where there are four courts.

While Mc Intosh and her team sort out their problems, Maple and Falcons are locked in battle for title honours in the Division 2A . Both have a one hundred percent record of wins from their four matches

Young Strugglers with six wins and one drawn match are leading in Division 2B. Division 3 sees Clinchers and Xceed Sports Club out front, both played seven matches with one defeat each.

Originally set to conclude this month, the 2007 Cable & Wireless National Netball tournament looks more likely to have a July finish.
