Desmond Maloney hit the first century of this year’s United Insurance Secondary School’s cricket competition.

His 109 not out powered St. Joseph’s Convent Marriaqua to 228 for 8, against the Intermediate High School last Tuesday. Maloney hit nine fours and four sixes. He then bagged 2 for 5 in Intermediate’s total of 86. Assisting Maloney in their steam’s destruction were Darren Sayers 2 for 14, and Malcolm Richards and Mickhail Bradshaw both with 2 for 31.{{more}}

In another high scoring encounter that same day, the St. Vincent Grammar School posted 328 for 6, against Kingstown Multi-Purpose.

Led by national Undrer-15 players Mickhail Weekes and Allan Dee Ballantyne. Weekes struck 96 not out laced with eight fours and two sixes, with Ballantyne making 72, punctuated with four fours and seven sixes.

Kingstown Multi Purpose were bowled out for 123. Keshorn Gonsalves 3 for 11, Weekes 2 for 18 and Kendol Hinds 2 for 21, combined in earning their school the victory by 197 runs.

The other match played on Tuesday saw Georgetown Multi Purpose earn a 64 run triumph over Adelphi Secondary.

Georgetown Multi Purpose 143. Zyran Harry 69 with seven boundaries. Bowling for Adelphi, Richie Richards 3 for 41, Romano Ellis 2 for 24 and Dwayne Richards 2 for 27. Adelphi were bundled out for 79, with Desroy Lavia taking 3 for 6, Rod Thomas 2 for 17 and Kenneth Lewis 2 for 19, losing by 64 runs.

Twenty-three schools including the Multi Purpose center are participating in this year’s competition, which has had a corporate partnership with United Insurance since 1984.

Two teams from each of the four zones will advance to the quarterfinals. The Mountain View Academy won the 2006 edition.
