Young Dickson looking at national selection

He has been a recent convert to Table Tennis, and already he is showing signs of some ability. Daryl Dickson is a 12-year-old St. Vincent and the Grenadines Grammar School student and he could be a force to reckon with in on the ‘Green table.”

Dickson showed signs of his prowess when the National Junior Tennis Championship wound up last Monday at their improvised headquarters at the Old Government Printery Building in Kingstown.{{more}}

Dickson won the Under-16 Singles title, overcoming Luke Velox 11-9, 11-7, 12-10, 11-7.

That was an improvement by Velox for the Under-13 title. That time, Dickson achieved the title in three straight sets, leaving Velox at 5,6 and 8.

It was a busy session for Dickson. He and Jovan Carrington combined to take the Under-13 Doubles title. They beat Luke Velox and Kavir Gaymes 11-8, 13-11, 8-11, 8-11, and 11-9.

Dickson, from Queen’s Drive in West St. George, expressed the hope of representing the nation.

His performance brought pleasure to National Tennis Association President Sean Stanley. Stanley was “pleased” with the level displayed at the championship and attributed the improvement to hard work of parents and coaches.

Dickson was not the only one in the spotlight. Kamal Hunte rebounded from a game loss, to beat Romano Spencer 6-11, 11-9, 11-7, 12-10 to take the Under-20 Singles title.

But those two teamed up to take care of Damion Dublin and Keron John 11-6, 11-5, 11-4 to win the Under-20 Doubles title.
