Vets Sports Club off to netball tourney in US

Vets Sports Club will be part of the Festival of Netball in Broward County, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA, July 21-24.

The national Division 2B Club of players over the age of 40 left here last Wednesday for the North American State.{{more}}

The contingent consists of nine players, the manager/coach as well as two supporters.

The festival coincides with the World Under-21 Netball championship.

This is not the first time that Vets will be participating in a competition among their peers.

The verterans were part of the Olden Goldies in Hawaii in 2000 and played in the Vintage tournament in Barbados 2000.

The evergreen bunch is very active on the local circuit. Apart from being participants in the national club tournament, Vets is a regular team in the Ashburton Sports and Cultural Organisation (ASCO) competition.

The Fort Lauderdale sojourn will however be a new experience.

It will be the first time for most of them playing on indoor courts.

Vets have demonstrated a high degree of independence and have raised their own finances to take care of the participation. This has been done through a series of ventures undertaken on an ongoing basis.

Vets, who opted to forego this year’s Olden Goldies in the Cook Islands in preference to the Festival of Netball, is already planning for the 2007 venture slated for Perth, Australia.

While St. Vincent and the Grenadines is not part of the Under 21 championship, this country will be represented at the International Federation of Netball Association (IFNA) Congress.

President of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Netball Association, Doris McIntosh, and past president Gloria Ballantyne, will be at the forum.

McIntosh will double up as a member of the Vets Club.
