Adonal Foyle Athletics and Academic camps return to SVG

The Adonal Foyle Athletics and Academics Camp returns to St. Vincent and the Grenadines after a one year absence, but with a difference.{{more}}

However, the camp will also see two venues touched: Arnos Vale on mainland St. Vincent and Canouan in the Grenadines.

The Arnos Vale camp, which is dubbed the All Star edition, runs from July 20 to 23.

This All Star Camp will be a three-night overnight experience for about 100 young basketballers from age 12 to 14.

The camp then goes to Canouan on July 25, the birth place of Foyle.

And, as the Athletics and Academics Camp broadens its spectrum, Dominica has been added to the 2011 programme.

The camp touches down on Dominica on July 18, before coming to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The 2011 edition of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines leg has been made possible by the Bequia Basketball Association, Caribbean Healthy Lifestyle Project, Ingrid Foyle-Samuel, Karib Cable, Lorson Lewis, Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sport, National Sports Council, Owen Isaacs, Roseman Adams, Sabrina Mitchell, the St. Vincent Grammar School, Tamarind Beach Hotel and the Young Island Resort.

When the camps were held in 2009, Bequia, Barrouallie and Union Island were on the itinerary.

Last year, Foyle, through his Kerosene Lamp Foundation, took six youngsters, who showed promise from previous camps, on a two week Summer Camp in Orlando, Florida.

The programme, called the All Star Student Athletes (ASA), afforded the six young basketball players the opportunity to become student-athletes and provide future opportunities for scholarships to help pave the way to their individual success. Those who attended were Jemmile France – Bequia, Zanif Sandy – Canouan, Nemiah Alexander – Mayreau, Consolo Adams – Barrouallie, Leandru Edwards – Calliaqua, and Azizah Stowe – Union Island.

They were accompanied by two chaperones, Michael Penniston of Bequia and Owen Isaacs of Mayreau.

Also last year, the Athletics and Academics camp was staged in Trinidad and Tobago.

Foyle, who is the only Vincentian to have played in the NBA, served the professional Basketball circuit from 1997 to 2010.

Soon after his retirement, the Orlando Magic named Foyle the team’s Director of Player Development. (RT)
