“Baliso (Balliceaux): Demo Song of Memory, Healing, and Cultural Reflection released
In a moving tribute to history, identity, and resilience, Vincentian-born Garifuna artist Ganigi introduces her latest musical work, “Baliso (Balliceaux)”-a reflective song inspired by the sacred island of Balliceaux in St. Vincent and the Grenadines known traditionally as Yurumein.
Balliceaux holds profound historical significance as the site where the Garifuna ancestors-then known as Black Caribs-were exiled in 1797 under harsh and inhumane conditions. Many perished, while survivors were later forcibly displaced to Roatán, Honduras, marking the beginning of the Garifuna diaspora across Central America.
Through “Baliso (Balliceaux),” Ganigi captures the emotional and spiritual connection that continues to bind the Garifuna people to this sacred land. The song’s slow, meditative tempo creates space for reflection, mourning, and remembrance, while also expressing hope for healing and reconnection, a release issued on behalf of the artist states.
“This song is a reflection of our story,” Ganigi shares. “Balliceaux connects us as a people, it represents loss, survival, and the enduring strength of our ancestors.”
Born in Fancy, St. Vincent, Ganigi is a recording artist and cultural advocate dedicated to preserving and promoting the Garifuna language and heritage through music. Singing in both Garifuna and English, her work bridges generations and geographies, ensuring that the stories of her people remain alive.
Her music not only honours the past but also serves as a call to awareness, particularly among younger generations, encouraging them to embrace and carry forward their cultural identity.
A demo version of “Baliso (Balliceaux)” is currently available on YouTube, offering listeners an early opportunity to experience this heartfelt tribute.
As conversations around heritage and historical remembrance continue to grow, Ganigi’s work stands as a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural preservation and storytelling through music.
