“Soca Relations” Introduces a New Theatrical Genre in Caribbean Entertainment

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent and the Grenadines: A new stage production titled “Soca Relations” is set to premiere on June 6. Created by Vincentian creative Dawson Billingy, the production aims to redefine how music and storytelling intersect in Caribbean entertainment. It is being recognized as a potential first-of-its-kind soca musical drama, merging structured theatre with the high-energy sound of soca music.

Directed by David “Darkie” Williams, the production presents a continuous narrative where characters, dialogue, and music work together to advance the storyline. Unlike traditional concerts or stage plays, “Soca Relations” uses soca music as a storytelling device rather than solely for entertainment. Soca was pioneered by Ras Shorty I in Trinidad and Tobago and is widely known as the driving force behind Carnival across the region.

While the genre is typically associated with celebration and dance, “Soca Relations” explores its potential as a medium for narrative expression. The production brings together a team of creatives and professionals supporting its development and execution. Tyiesha Clarke,contributing to the promotional strategy. Sean Frederick, The Drama Officer, provides the technical, logistical, and professional support.

Keif Adams, Event Coordinator and Co-Organizer, oversees event execution, bringing experience in entertainment business, artist management, and media production. Hosted by Passion and Drive Studio, the production reflects a growing effort to expand the boundaries of Caribbean theatre and performance. By combining elements of drama, music, and cultural expression, “Soca Relations” represents an emerging approach to storytelling within the region.
