SVG CUBA Friendship Society condemns US military action in Venezuela
THE SVG CUBA FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY has described the US military incursion into Venezuela on Saturday, January 3 2026 as a “Violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty”.
Their views are contained in the following declaration: The SVG Cuba Friendship Society condemns the blatant disregard for international law and morality with the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicholas Maduro on January 3, 2026.
This was a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela as established in Articles 1 and 2 of the Charter of the United Nations.
Statements made by the president of the United States of America, Donald Trump, demonstrates that this lawless intervention into the internal affairs of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has the sole intent of capturing the vast oil reserves of this nation said to be the largest in the world. This blatant act of imperialist aggression represents a major throwback to the darkest days of colonial conquest and plunder aimed solely at taking control of the largest known reserves of petroleum on the planet.
Gunboat diplomacy must be condemned in the strongest terms and we therefore support the assertions by CARICOM and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States that our region is and must remain a Zone of Peace.
•Recall the invasion of our closest Caribbean neighbour Grenada which resulted in the loss of many innocent lives.
•Recall the invasion of Panama and the kidnapping and subsequent trial of the president of Panama, General Manuel Noriega, on January 3 1989 which also resulted in the loss of many innocent lives.
•Mourn the loss of thirty two Cuban patriots assassinated during this invasion of Venezuelan sovereignty. We therefore express our condolences to the People
of the Republic of Cuba.
•Note with concern the threat made by United States of American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, that Cuba can be next.
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has been a proven friend to CARICOM nations and has assisted our economies in staying afloat during the most difficult years of the world economic crisis from 2008.
The Republic of Cuba too has also contributed with immense sacrifice and solidarity toward the development of our blessed region and in particular St.Vincent and the Grenadines. We therefore thank both nations, even as we vehemently condemn the continued economic sanctions levied on both nations. These sanctions have created undue hardships and suffering for the people of both friendly nations and have led to the mass exodus of Venezuelans and Cubans to many countries, including our own, where their lots could be temporarily improved.
• We declare our abhorrence of behaviour by the United States of America to impose the Monroe Doctrine which seeks to limit the right of any nation in the Caribbean and Latin America to self-determination and sovereignty, as guaranteed by the United Nations Charter.
•We finally call for the unconditional release of the legitimate and democratically elected president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicholas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, as an important step toward returning to a process of peaceful dialogue of the Venezuelan peoples.
